Brace your arteries...

July-August 2015

Hi all, Rach here. I love food, it makes me incredibly happy. So say hello to another food post! The best type of post. ;-)

Doughnuts...

We walked three hours from our house for doughnuts. Worth it! They were very good, but I have to admit that the jam and cream doughnuts at 'Little & Friday' in Auckland are just as good, if not slightly better... I traveled from Wellington on three occasions just to get them (on the premise of work, who kindly paid for my flights). I'm picking up on a theme here....

'Bread Ahead Bakery & School' is based in Borough Markets and we felt that the three hour walk  definitely cancelled out the calories. It's maths, it's complicated, let's just go with it.

Imma leave a few photos of the experience for you to linger over...

Ohhh yeah...
**Angels descend and lovingly caress each glistening, sugar encrusted masterpiece**

The picture of four doughnuts is of 'Raspberry Ripple', 'Creme Caramel & Salted Honeycomb', 'Chocolate Custard' and 'Classic Vanilla'. I was gunning for the Salted Caramel, but Vanilla was my favourite. Mike preferred Raspberry, of course. He ALWAYS picks fruit anything over chocolate anything. So weird. They were chocka with filling. Much more filling than doughnut.

Burgers...

May I introduce you to my favourite burger in London, (SO FAR), Bleeker St! Frick yeah!
Out by Old Spitalfields Market lives a branch of Bleeker St. And it is beautiful.

Here is mine, a delightful double bacon cheese burger. With Angry Fries. Bold! So bold. Fries dressed with blue cheese and hot sauce. Veeeeery rich.

Beverages:

And Mike's meal, the Bleeker Black! Two beef patties encasing a slice of black pudding. For someone who prefers their meat cooked medium, I was very impressed that not only did he manage it, but he enjoyed it. That's fairly rare! It was delicious though. We decided they under-cooked the patties to compensate for the very well cooked black pudding, so it was nice and juicy. Well played Bleeker St, well played.

And a Gherkin!

I booked this pretty much as soon as we got here. 'Searcy's' at the Gherkin is London's highest private members club, but this summer they opened to the public for 8 weeks. While St Paul's is my favourite historic building in London, the Gherkin is my favourite modern structure on the skyline. I think it's beautiful.

The restaurant is located on the 39th floor. And the views are breath-taking.

I can see St Paul's, can you?
That afternoon Mike heard that he'd landed his job! So we thought it sensible to kick off the evening with a glass of Mumm, served from the Champagne trolley. Then we opted for the five-course degustation. Because, degustation. It was called 'The Art of Spice' and it was delicious.

The Moroccan lamb was amazing. I like to think it was from New Zealand.

Ah, food.
